Creator of Massachusetts Economic Index Named New
Co-Editor of UMass Economic Journal

Dr. Alan Clayton-Matthews, creator of the Massachusetts Current and Leading Economic Indices, has been named co-editor of Massachusetts Benchmarks, the quarterly economic journal published by the UMass Donahue Institute in cooperation with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

The Donahue Institute is the public service outreach and economic development unit of the University of Massachusetts Office of the President.

"I am pleased and honored to assume the role of co-editor of Massachusetts Benchmarks," Dr. Clayton-Matthews said. "I will strive to maintain the quality, timeliness, and usefulness of Benchmarks to its audience, a task made easier by the excellent colleagues and staff who have guided the publication since its inception. This project has much to offer the public in these challenging times for the Commonwealth and the Massachusetts economy."

Dr. Clayton-Matthews is an assistant professor and the director of quantitative methods in the Public Policy Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He joins Dr. Lynn Browne, executive vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and co-editor of Benchmarks; and Dr. Robert Nakosteen, associate professor at UMass Amherst and the journal's executive editor, in charting the editorial direction of the journal, which was launched five years ago this fall.

"Since its inception, Massachusetts Benchmarks, under the co-editorship of Professor Craig Moore of UMass Amherst and Dr. Lynn Browne, has performed its mission exceedingly well,'' University of Massachusetts President William M. Bulger said. "Professor Clayton-Matthews' work on the Massachusetts Current and Leading Economic Indices over the past five years has rapidly become a critical source of information for policy makers, business strategists, and the media."

"Working with both Craig and Alan has been an enjoyable and an educational experience,'' Dr. Browne said. "My colleagues at the Boston Fed and I were delighted when Craig asked us to participate in the launching of Massachusetts Benchmarks, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Alan as editor. Craig will be a tough act to follow, but Alan's in-depth knowledge of the Massachusetts economy makes him an excellent successor."

Said Dr. Lynn Griesemer, executive director of the UMass Donahue Institute: "Massachusetts Benchmarks is a lead economic resource of the Commonwealth. We are pleased with the first five years of this strategic partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and we look forward to Dr. Clayton-Matthews's co-editorship in the coming years."
